Alyssa? Present!

I haven't really written much in a while.  There have been so many changes since I came home from Peru - all of them good.  I'm back flying the line!  Except I haven't flown a trip since Thanksgiving.  Boyfriend and I are doing well; we even made it home from Munich together so that's exciting.  He's home in Colorado, and we both go back to work this weekend.  Maybe I'll even get a trip.

There's plenty to be thankful for.  I managed to score myself THREE Thanksgivings.  There was the one at home with my parents and sister, the one with Boyfriend and his family, and then one in Colorado for him and his roommates.  Boyfriend's mother's house lost power while the turkey was roasting.  There was a failed attempt at BBQ-ing the 18 lb bird.  Sides were microwaved.  I felt bad for the kid - he'd staged a turkey fast all month and alas, there was no turkey to break it.  When I went out to see him in Colorado at the beginning of the month, we just did it again.  We ate in the dining room like adults!  The best part about all three?  We were together, whomever the we's may be.

I'm currently working on a piece for my high school's career day.  They've asked for alumni who can donate their time to come talk to the students about what they do.  I'll have 20 minutes and 10 for questions.  It feels good to be sitting here typing away; I haven't written much other than general correspondence.  I haven't challenged myself much in the way of thinking about things other than will Carrie Mathison make it out of <> alive or how sad I am that the Newsroom is over in favor of that silly show about Girls who can't quite seem to get their sh*t together.  This is the first time I've sat to write a cohesive, introspective piece.  What can I say that the other careers/speakers won't?  What can I tell a bunch of snot nosed kids about how serious security is when they were all born in 1999?  Career Day is April 23, so there's that in my favor :)

OPW: One Pot Wonders

Quinoa Sweet Potato Chili

Onion, celery, one can diced tomato, 2/3 to 1 cup quinoa, packet of chili seasoning (I use reduced sodium), 1 lb chicken breast tenderloins, 1 or 2 sweet potatoes peeled and cubed, 4 to 5 cups chicken broth

Throw it all in the slow cooker, on high for up to four hours. Pull out the chicken and shred; add a can of drained and rinsed black beans. Stir, make sure beans are heated through.

My slow cooker wasn't quite big enough for the original portions, so I had to cut back on the quinoa and stock. It's pretty delicious and reasonably heathy, and easy to make vegetarian.

Serve with Fritos :-)

Freezes well.

Oktoberfest

Things I want come to me.

What goes around, comes around.

Ich liebe Oktoberfest.

Four years ago, September 2011, I got it in my head that I wanted to go to Oktoberfest.  Having jumped at every chance to go to Munich since my airline started flying there, I had to make this happen.  A colleague of mine, S, said she would join me and wanted to go along for the ride.

And what a ride it was.

We got first class both ways, met wild Aussie / Texan ex-pat boys, drank our fill in the Hofbrau tent, rode the beer carousel, did the Mike's Bikes tour, and just had the most amazing adventure to date of my 27 years.

And of course going into 2012, K wanted nothing more than to experience the nonsense.  And we did it all - chicken sandwich from the stand next to Hofbrau, and after the pork place, currywurst, drinking beers in the real Hofbrauhaus in the old city, seeing Der Fliegerlied all over the place.  I was told we could not find the beer carousel, but we did find a set of pilots in the beer tents who ended up non-reving home with us.

2013, I had to take care of my grandmother.  Even if I would have had vacation in that month, sometimes you have to be an adult.  All of these stories are previously documented, and if you're a loyal reader, things you already know... here's the part you don't.

I kept trying to get Boyfriend to see how going to Europe for the weekend is a reasonable thing to do.  He doesn't disagree as much as he used to, but with his schedule, I knew going to Germany was not in the cards for us just yet.  I said in passing to a non-airline friend of mine (JMC)  that was I was considering going to Oktoberfest and she asked me at which bar... My response was in Munich.  She's still coming to terms with while she owns a fine piece of German auto-engineering, I have access to all the Boeings.

October had begun, and with my lenient schedule at my desk job (which is coming to an end SOON!), a flight attendant friend of mine, MM, had asked the people of the book if anyone was willing to go to Oktoberfest with her.  So I responded and posted on the book, which is something I haven't done since I got back from Peru, a simple "I'm game."  And after that, it was game on.  That was Thursday morning.  We were sitting in first class the next night, and eating the infamous chicken sandwich, and sneaking into the Hofbrau tent Saturday afternoon.

AND IT WAS AWESOME.

MM invested in a drindl, which I still haven't done myself.  As two pretty American girls, it was quite easy to make new drinking friends and we did all over the place - the Norwegians, the two Scotsmen in their kilts and all their Scottish glory (oh yes - this is fact), the cute nerdy German who would loosely translate different lyrics for us.  At one point, MM went to the toilet, and came back with another flight attendant friend of ours!  That happened two nights in a row - she kept coming back with him!  What was so exciting about this experience was making it all the way to the end of the night on the very last night, struggling to understand the words but feeling the sentiment of how wonderful celebrating Oktoberfest was this year and til next year my friend!  MM is also in the process of completing a list of things to do before she turns 30, and I was honored to help her and share one of my favorite places and experiences with her.  It was a blast.

I can't fully express my love for Bavaria, for Oktoberfest, for beer.  For that stupid chicken sandwich!  But to be there, and to be given the opportunity to go again and again?  I'm just the luckiest girl in the world, full of nothing but gratitude and thankfulness.

Oktoberfest 2015!  Who's with me???

Yeah, so... that happened

So Spoiled! But Not Rotten...

These past few months have been a whirlwind.  The "I'm home from Peru" depression finally melted way after my birthday, after Hilary and I went to Rome.  It was far too delicious not too.

I spent June in and out of the City, Chicago, Edinburgh - places I always forget how much I love.

July was beach time, a day in our nation's capital, and being told I was the girlfriend.  Not asked by him, just told.

And in true Alyssa fashion, I'm in it for the adventure.  He plans all these amazing trips, mostly because I make him, and I'm loving reaping all the benefits.  August was spent in Colorado: exploring the front range, hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park, racing down alpine slides in Steamboat Springs, seeing Future Islands in Fort Collins (really fun band to see live), and of course eating all the foods (elk and bison and Mexican - oh my!).

I'd like to say I'm tired and want to stay home, but who am I trying to kid?  Though there's nothing specific on the travel itinerary just yet, we all know some wild and crazy trip is headed my way.  And I wouldn't have it any other way.

PS to Boyfriend - I believe you owe me something ;)

Dear IAD Starbucks in baggage claim,

I ordered a short latte with soy. You gave me a short latte with whole milk.

This did not make for a pleasant date experience planned for later that day. My stomach was in total disarray, and was very not cute.

I'm mad at you and will tell all my friends to be mad at you too.

Love always,
Alyssa

Hot Stuff!

A bit ago, I kept telling a single friend of mine that we have to go out because I talk to strangers.

Well apparently, strangers talk to me.

I'm at the airport, in the non-rev special, and a cute FO headed to LIS started talking to me, for no real reason. "Looks like it's going to storm" was his opening line. I was a bit green because in my seven years, I've never been to LIS.

As I was going through security, the cute 20-something TSA agent put my bag on the conveyor belt for me, and said that there are still manors and chivalry in the world. Now I can vouch for it!

And before I even embarked on my journey, I was told "If you don't love yourself, you cannot love others. You will not be able to love others. If you have no compassion for yourself then you are not able of developing compassion for others." - Dalai Lama

I must love me a lot!

This is NOT a large! (I want a liter of iced tea!)

Dear PHL Dunkin Donuts,

I hate your stinking guts. You're the scum between my toes. You make me vomit!

No boxes for munchkins, no lemon wedges, charged me for a large iced tea when clearly this (insert picture here) is medium.

AND no employee discount.

Oh how I long for the nice ladies at the Secret Dunks in baggage claim, terminal C, EWR.

Love,
Alyssa

Prior to arrival in ORD

"Ladies and gentleman, if the person in front of you has their seat back reclined, give them a shove because they're blocking your emergency exit."

Awesome. Now airlines condone hitting.

Chats with Kathy

To set the scene: Commercial for online home schooling comes on the TV.

Me: What do you think of home schooling?

Kathy: There are two things you shouldn't do at home: go to school and die. They have institutions for those things.

How much can Alyssa eat: Part 2

I have a few, let's say, food sensitivities. When I turned 27, all of a sudden there was a list of things that my body decided it would no longer tier late dietarily. Those foods include, but are not limited to: shrimp, peanuts, avocado, chocolate, and possibly mushrooms or barley.

So tonight, I decided to put chocolate to the test with real gelato. I could no longer resist. With a toiletry bag full of pepto and Imodium, I figured I'd give it a shot.

Thus far, doing okay and it was well worth it!!! How much can Alyssa eat? Enough to be content and satisfy the want-to-be choco-holic in me.

Chats with Kathy: relationships

"Oh, you don't want to see him anymore? Tell him you eloped while he was away. Then there won't be any questions. These things happen."

So. Helpful.
